Speak like a leader


There is often a tendency for one to over complicate a message one is trying to convey by using complex vocabulary and in-concise sentences aiming to sound superior and establish an air of dominance. 


Or...


People like to use big words and long sentences to sound clever. 


Perhaps you can think back to a time you were in a meeting or in conversation with one of these types. They can be difficult to listen to and most of the time you just want to scream, ‘What are you telling me?!’ The point of this article is simple, say what you mean and mean what you say. 


Say what you mean


‘Go left’ / ‘Don’t go right’. One is assertive, clear and concise, the other is somewhat ambiguous, leaving the actual meaning of what’s been said open for interpretation. As a leader, you are clear, concise and confident, saying what you mean conveys that... as well as your message. 


Not helping


Using over complicated sentences doesn’t mask the BS, in fact, it does the opposite. If you truly know what you’re talking about, then you can explain it to a 4 year old - i.e in very basic terms. 


Think back to a meeting or conversation with someone who is just spouting off all sorts of corporate speak and jargon with no real content or decision behind what they’re saying. You then have to decode and fathom what the hell is trying to be said. Useless. Just say what you mean. No one is impressed by fancy words, just say what needs to be said. 


Believe it or not


Further to that, points made with over complicated words and sentences are actually less believable than when conveying the same message with simple sentences. 


You can have a completely valid and interesting point, but what words you use could determine how seriously you’re taken. So, there’s no real benefit to it other than trying to make yourself sound really smart and pump up the old ego. Fine for some, but not for us real leaders. 


The takeaway


Say it clearly. Say it concisely. Use whatever words are right for you and your message, but don’t try and dress things up. It will be to your detriment. 


Mean what you say


This becomes a lot easier when what you’re saying is nice and simple; saying 10 words convincingly is a lot easier than saying 100.  


With that, it’s no secret that saying something with real heart and belief is received more readily than something that is delivered in a boring tone. 


Say it as it is


It is prominent that when something is understood by a speaker, a listener can react to it. Imagine saying one of these two quotes to a room full of people: “It’s bad” / “It isn’t exactly what was expected and there is perhaps a need for some changes”. 


Out of the two quotes I’m sure the tone of voice changed and I bet you could fill one with your own emotion a lot easier than you could the other. Simple is far more convincing, and these are just words on a page.


Express it as it is


Speak in the manner of how you want people to react. Lead the way with your tone of voice. If something is bad, but we are to remain calm, then say it’s bad but say it calmly. Likewise if it’s bad and we want to provoke a reaction, say it in a way that reflects the situation.


It really is that simple


I know this isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it’s definitely something to keep in your mind.


Finally


As humans, we like feeding off one another’s reactions. As mentioned in another article; we communicate on so many levels, our body language and tone of voice to name but a few. 


So as the person who is speaking, you will be more relatable if what you’re saying is easy to follow and expressed with emotion. And people will listen. You can’t ignore something that is as clear as day.



As leaders we put fire in the belly of those around us, we do this with the energy and drive that we create and we communicate this through our actions and our words. 


First understand what you want to say, then put it into the most elementary form you can, then believe every word and express it as such.
